Sexual education is the information and awareness-raising activities provided to monitor the physical, emotional, social, mental and sexual development of children and adolescents and to enable them to internalize the roles of girls and boys.

Why is Talking About Sexuality Important?

Whether you want it or not, children and teenagers learn about sexuality mostly from each other, from you, or partly from the internet. As a parent, your role is very important in helping your child learn the right information about sexuality.

When Should I Start Talking About Sexuality?

Children should start talking about sexuality from an early age. A question frequently asked by children is where the baby comes from. Puberty starts to show its signs as early as eight today. Therefore, it is very important to prepare children for puberty.

Children should be informed about the changes they will experience in their bodies before they experience them. When this does not happen, they may be afraid or anxious. You may think that you are encouraging your child to have sexuality by talking about sexuality. However, research on the subject shows that in families where sexuality can be talked about, young people experience sexuality when they are ready and are much more careful about protection methods.

How to Talk to Children About Sexuality?

Don't be late. It makes your job easier if you start talking about this topic while the child is still young. Answer the questions asked naturally and simply, in a way that is appropriate for the child's level.

Take advantage of books with sexual education content written for age groups.

Give yourself time to think. When you come across a difficult question, say "that's a good question, let's talk about it when we get home, etc." and give yourself some time to think.

Ask your child what they know and think about the subject. This will help you understand how much they know.

If you don't know the answer to the question, express your ignorance sincerely, but definitely research the answer to the question.

Try to tell the truth as much as possible, don't use made-up stories.

Take advantage of opportunities in daily life. Talk about the subject while washing dishes or watching TV. This will help the child feel comfortable talking about sexuality.
